Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Rubykins Willow is a variety we value for its distinct seasonal features. In early winter, it produces attractive catkins that emerge in triplets. During the summer, the plant exhibits significant side branching (particularly at the tips), which creates dense foliage suitable for a hedge. We propagate this variety by taking cuttings, placing them in the ground with ample water and light, where they reliably take root and grow.
Botanical Specs & Profile:
Salix koriyanagi Rubykins is an upright, compact, deciduous shrub willow growing 4 to 6 feet tall and wide. It features small ruby-red catkins in opposite pairs on bare stems in early spring, followed by narrow, blue-green lanceolate leaves that open with a pink flush. In winter, the bare branches turn yellow. This cultivar prefers full sun to part shade and moist to wet soils, making it suitable for rain gardens, hedges, or borders.
