Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Hakuro Nishiki Dappled Willow is a variety we grow in rows within our willow bed, where they eventually grow to resemble a hedge. This plant can be propagated by cuttings if you want to create a hedge of your own at a lower cost. It features beautiful white, green, and pink leaves. It grows slower for us which may be due to our local environment, but we always wonder if the lack chlorophyll is the true reason it grows more slowly. Like all of our willow trees, we prune it back regularly to encourage a fuller, more bush like appearance.
Botanical Specs & Profile:
Dappled Willow Salix integra Hakuro Nishiki is a compact deciduous shrub that typically reaches a mature height of 4 to 6 feet and a spread of 5 to 7 feet, though it can grow up to 10 feet. It features an upright growth habit with arching branches. The narrow, lance-shaped leaves emerge pink in spring before maturing to a variegated mix of creamy white, pink, and green. In the fall, foliage turns yellow before dropping, exposing coral-red stems that provide winter interest. This shrub thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers fertile, consistently moist, well-drained soils, though it tolerates temporary wet or dry conditions. Hardy to USDA Zones 4 through 7, it produces yellow catkins from March to May and responds well to regular pruning, which maximizes foliage variegation and controls size.
This product is a dormant cutting that will take root, leaf out, and grow if planted under the right conditions.
