How to prune a cherry tree using the KGB system
We have planted over 200 cherry trees and are training them by the Kym Green Bush (KGB) method. The KGB system is easy to implement but more important to us, it creates a pedestrian orchard where ladders are not necessary! We have always found pruning videos to be difficult to learn from... experience has been a better teacher. But the way this video slowly yand methodically goes through the years of pruning cherries using the KGB system has been incredibly useful for us.
The video is a detailed guide on pruning young trees to ensure healthy growth and optimal cherry production. The process begins with cutting seedlings to a specific height and selecting a few healthy buds to encourage strong primary branches. Using grafting wax to protect larger cuts and managing the length of lead branches are essential steps in these early stages. By carefully thinning out weak or low-growing branches, you can create a balanced structure that prevents overcrowding and allows for better light penetration.
As the cherry tree matures, the focus shifts to maintaining a flat top and removing internal growth that might shade out fruit-bearing sections. The guide emphasizes the importance of preventing branches from rubbing against each other to avoid damaging the tree. Proper pruning techniques, such as making small stubs for new growth and protecting large cuts, help the cherry tree produce multiple new branches. Following these steps ensures a productive cherry harvest and a well-shaped tree.
