Montmorency Pie Cherry (Prunus cerasus 'Montmorency') Scionwood
Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Montmorency sour cherry is a classic pie cherry variety that produces bright red, soft, and very juicy fruit. While we focus our main production on sweet cherries for the farmers market, we also grow a few of these pie cherry trees because the fruit is highly sought after and difficult to find in typical markets. The flavor is tart, making it less ideal for eating fresh off the tree but excellent for baking into pies and tarts. It ripens around the same time as the Bing variety, and the fruit can hang on the tree for an extended period once ripe.
Botanical Specs & Profile:
Montmorency Pie Cherry is a classic tart cherry variety originating from France. It produces large, bright red fruit with firm yellow flesh and clear juice, offering a tangy flavor profile that is ideal for baking, preserves, and juicing. The tree exhibits a rounded to spreading growth habit, reaching a mature height of 15 to 25 feet, though semi-dwarf and dwarf rootstocks are available for smaller spaces. It is self-fertile, adapts to a variety of well-drained soils, requires full sun, and is hardy in USDA zones 4 through 8.
This product is a dormant cutting that will generally be used for grafting onto an existing tree of the same type or onto compatible rootstock. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee grafting success. If you are new to grafting, follow the link on each product page for 'Videos on Grafting...'.
