Willoughby Black Currant (Ribes nigrum 'Willoughby') Cutting

Grower's Notes (Our Experience):

Willoughby Black Currant is a variety we grow that produces a strong-tasting, tart fruit with a low sugar content. Because of its strong flavor, we recommend using it in cooking, jams, or recipes where sugar is added. This variety is highly productive, with fruit-bearing branches that lean under the weight of the crop. It is a resilient plant that continues to put out new growth even during dry late-season conditions. We propagate it by taking nine-inch cuttings with a few nodes, placing them in pots with potting soil, and leaving them outside through the winter to root and leaf out by springtime. This same propagation method can also be used for other currants.

Botanical Specs & Profile:

Willoughby Black Currant is a productive, deciduous shrub reaching a mature height of 3 to 5 feet with a spread of 4 to 6 feet. It features arching branches that bear cream-colored flowers in spring, followed by clusters of tart black berries that ripen from June to early July. The branches typically droop under the weight of the fruit. Suitable for USDA hardiness zones 3 through 8, this variety grows in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil.

This product is a dormant cutting that will take root, leaf out, and grow if planted under the right conditions. Since plant propagation success rates can vary depending on climate, location, and timing there is no universal recipe for success.
