Whissender Willow (Salix triandra 'Whissender') Cutting
Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Whissender Willow is a Salix triandra variety featuring a yellowish-green wood that dries to a light brown color. Unlike its darker relatives like Black Maul and Noir de Villaines, this variety offers a lighter hue suitable for basketry. We have found that its rods possess a slightly larger circumference than the other triandra varieties, making it well-suited for coarser basketry projects. It is a fast-growing plant; our specimens reached heights of 6 to 8 feet within a single year after winter planting. We coppice the plants annually, cutting them back close to the ground to harvest the rods for their color and utility, a practice that also allows the variety to function well as an attractive hedge.

Salix triandra Whissender, also known as Almond-leaved willow, is a fast-growing deciduous shrub or small tree widely utilized for basketry and hedging. This variety produces upright, yellowish-green rods that dry to a light brown color. The stems feature a slightly larger circumference than other triandra cultivars, making them suitable for coarse basket weaving. It can be coppiced annually for production or grown as an ornamental property boundary or hedge.
This product is a dormant cutting that will take root, leaf out, and grow if planted under the right conditions.
