Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Vandalay Sweet Cherry is a variety developed in Canada that ripens after early varieties like Early Burlat, Chelan, and Black Pearl, but before the main ripening season of Bing and Rainier. This deep burgundy cherry is a cross between Van and Stella. It is self-fruitful, though it benefits from a nearby pollinator. While we grow it on Gisela 5 rootstock, we are shifting our cherry trees to mazzard seedling rootstock to get greater growth and accommodate our poor soil conditions. The fruit has a high sugar content and it features a softer texture. It's a great cherry.
Botanical Specs & Profile:
Vandalay Sweet Cherry is a deciduous fruit tree developed in Canada from a cross between Van and Stella. It produces large, kidney-shaped, wine-red cherries with dark red flesh and purple juice that mature mid-season, around the same time as the Bing variety. The tree exhibits a spreading growth habit, performs well on Mazzard rootstock, and adapts to USDA hardiness zones 5 through 9. It is a self-fertile cultivar that can also serve as a pollinator for other sweet cherries, requiring full sun and well-drained loamy soil.
