Smiths Willow (Salix x smithiana) Cutting

Grower's Notes (Our Experience):

Smith's Willow is a large-leafed variety featuring dense summer foliage and multicolored winter catkins. We prune it annually close to the ground through a process called coppicing, which maintains its unique seasonal characteristics and vibrant color. If left unpruned, the branches mature into a standard brown tree trunk. The flexible yearly growth from this plant can also be harvested for working into structures. We find it to be pretty vigorous in our willow bed.

Botanical Specs & Profile:

Salix × smithiana, commonly known as Smith's Willow or Silky-leaved Osier, is a vigorous, upright deciduous shrub or small tree reaching up to 9 meters in height. It features lance-shaped green leaves with silvery-grey, hairy undersides that turn yellow in autumn. In late winter and early spring, it produces dense silver-grey catkins before foliage emerges. This variety thrives in full sun and prefers moist, wet, or boggy soils. It is suitable for hedging, living structures, basketry, and wildlife gardens.

This product is a dormant cutting that will take root, leaf out, and grow if planted under the right conditions. Since plant propagation success rates can vary depending on climate, location, and timing there is no universal recipe for success. If you are new to plant propagation, follow the link on each product page for 'Videos on How to Propagate...'.
