Shinko Pear (Pyrus pyrifolia 'Shinko') Scionwood
Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Shinko pear is the last of our Asian pears to ripen. We keep the tree pruned to about 3 feet off the ground so we can harvest the fruit easily without using ladders. The fruit is large, maintaining a crisp, apple-like texture even as it ripens, which makes it well-suited for use in salads. It is similar in shape, color, texture, and flavor to Chojuro but ripens about a month and a half later, making it a reliable option if you want to extend your fruit season.
Botanical Specs & Profile:
The Shinko Asian Pear is a deciduous fruit tree that produces medium to large, round fruit with a distinct bronze-russet skin. The yellow-white flesh is firm, crisp, and juicy with a sweet, complex flavor. Ripening late in the season, typically from August to September, it is recognized as one of the longest-storing Asian pear varieties, maintaining its quality for three to four months under refrigeration. The tree exhibits an open growth habit with glossy, dark green foliage and clusters of white blooms in spring. It reaches a mature height of 10 to 15 feet with a spread of 6 to 8 feet. Well-suited for USDA hardiness zones 5 through 9, this cultivar requires 450 chill hours and performs best in full sun and well-drained soil. Shinko is noted for its high resistance to fire blight. While partially self-fertile, cross-pollination with another Asian pear variety, such as Hosui or Chojuro, maximizes fruit set and yield.
This product is a dormant cutting that will generally be used for grafting onto an existing tree of the same type or onto compatible rootstock. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee grafting success. If you are new to grafting, follow the link on each product page for 'Videos on Grafting...'.
