Seckel Pear (Pyrus communis 'Seckel') Scionwood

Grower's Notes (Our Experience):

Seckel Pear is a small European variety that was discovered in the United States about 200 years ago in Philadelphia. We love dehydrating this one... it tastes like candy! The fruit is very small and round with a deep brown maroon color, resembling some Asian pear varieties. It has a high sugar content and is sweeter than a typical pear. We grow this on a small tree that we prune heavily to keep the crop low for easy picking. In the maritime Pacific Northwest, this mid-season variety ripens in mid-September, around the same time as Orcas pear, Bartlett pear, or Honeycrisp apple. Those living in hotter areas further south can expect the fruit to ripen earlier.

Botanical Specs & Profile:

Seckel Pear is a compact, upright European pear variety originating in Pennsylvania. It produces small, rounded, yellowish-brown fruit with a reddish blush. The fine-grained flesh is smooth, juicy, and sweet. The tree is cold-hardy, frost-resistant, and shows strong resistance to fire blight. It adapts to full sun and well-drained soils, typically reaching a height of 10 to 15 feet at maturity.

This product is a dormant cutting that will generally be used for grafting onto an existing tree of the same type or onto compatible rootstock. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee grafting success. If you are new to grafting, follow the link on each product page for 'Videos on Grafting...'.
