Methley Plum (Prunus salicina 'Methley') Scionwood
Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Methley Plum is an Asian hybrid variety and the earliest plum we harvest, ripening in the middle of July in the San Juan Islands. Grown in full sun within the rain shadow of the Olympic Peninsula, this fast-growing tree has become the largest variety we planted five years ago. The fruit features red flesh, transitioning quickly from yellow-green to red as it matures. It is a clingstone variety known for its sweet flavor.
Botanical Specs & Profile:
Methley Plum is an upright, spreading Japanese plum tree reaching a mature height of 15 to 20 feet with a similar spread. It features fragrant white blossoms in early spring, followed by heavy crops of medium to large, round, purplish-red plums with sweet, juicy red flesh. It is one of the earliest plum varieties to ripen, with harvests typically occurring from June to early July. Suitable for USDA hardiness zones 5 through 9, this self-pollinating variety requires 150 to 250 chill hours, performs best in full sun, and adapts to a wide range of well-drained loamy soils.
