Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
King Edward flowering currant is one of the few flowering currants we have here on our farm. It is the first shrub we have that flowers, blooming early in the season around the same time as our plum and apricot blossoms while we are still in the daffodil stage. This shrub serves as an early season pollinator and can be easily multiplied by taking a cutting in the fall or winter and sticking it directly into the ground, where it will take root and leaf out on its own.
Botanical Specs & Profile:
King Edward VII Flowering Currant is a compact, upright deciduous shrub reaching a mature height of 5 to 8 feet and a spread of 3 to 5 feet. It features pendulous clusters of deep crimson-pink flowers that bloom in early spring before the foliage fully emerges, followed by small blue-black berries in the autumn. The dark green, maple-shaped leaves turn shades of yellow and gold in the fall. Suitable for USDA hardiness zones 5 through 9, this variety performs best in full sun to partial shade and requires well-drained soil.
