Kaat Willow (Salix x fragilis 'Kaat') Cutting
Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
While Kaat Willow can be used for basketry, it is primarily a variety we grow for its distinctive summer foliage and winter color. In the summer, it produces narrow, deep green leaves with different colors on each side, which create a shimmering effect in the breeze and form a dense hedge. When the leaves drop in the winter, the plant features bright yellow branches, or rods, which can be harvested for basketry and arrangements. We find that a good percentage of the rods have side branches, but many do not. To maintain this annual growth and winter color, we prune the plants back each year, either by coppicing near the ground or pollarding at a higher level.

Salix udensis Kaat Willow is a vigorous deciduous shrub grown for its winter interest and summer foliage. It produces upright, bright yellow stems or rods that provide color throughout the colder months. In summer, the plant features long, narrow, deep green leaves with silvery undersides, creating a shimmering effect in the wind. This variety grows rapidly and performs well when managed as a hedge or coppiced annually to maximize winter stem coloration. It is suitable for basketry, colorful floral arrangements, and structural landscape plantings.
This product is a dormant cutting that will take root, leaf out, and grow if planted under the right conditions.
