Grower's Notes (Our Experience):

Imperial Epineuse Plum is an early variety that we grow which ripens in late July and early August. It is a freestone plum, making it easy to pop out the seed to eat fresh or to process for dehydration. In our climate on the San Juan Islands, it ripens about a week or two after the Methley variety and a week or two before Shiro. Unlike some other plums that ripen all at once, this variety ripens gradually, allowing for a staggered harvest. It is a productive variety that bears dense clusters of fruit even on a young tree.

Botanical Specs & Profile:

Imperial Epineuse is an heirloom European prune plum variety that originated in Clairac, France, around 1870. The tree features an upright growth habit with vigorous branches and typically reaches a mature height of 12 to 16 feet when grown on semi-dwarf rootstock. It produces medium to large oval fruit with reddish-purple skin and firm, sweet amber flesh. This freestone variety is utilized for fresh eating and drying into prunes. The fruit ripens from late July to mid-August depending on the region, and the tree requires a different European plum variety for cross-pollination. Suitable for USDA hardiness zones 5 through 9.
