Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Holland Willow is a Salix purpurea variety that is well-suited for basketry work. When dried, its appearance changes significantly compared to when it is fresh and growing. We plant these cuttings in the winter and coppice them back to the ground every year to encourage new growth. Growing this willow requires placing the cutting into the ground in the proper direction with the bottom down. It requires a significant amount of water and sun to thrive. If you harvest the rods prior to dormancy (when there are still leaves on them), they have a tendency to dry to a green shade rather than a warm brown color.

Holland Willow (Salix purpurea 'Holland') is a multi-purpose deciduous shrub or small tree utilized for basketry and structural weaving. This variety features upright, slender stems with growth characteristics typical of purpurea selections. The leaves are blue-green, measuring 2 to 3 inches long and 0.5 inches wide, arranged in opposite or alternate patterns. It produces male catkins that emerge in late winter to early spring before the foliage appears. It grows rapidly, thrives in full sun and moist soils, and is propagated via dormant cuttings planted directly into the ground.
