Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Our Cinerea willow features silvery catkins in the late winter or early spring and functions well as a hedge or tree during the summer, showing attractive leaf and branch movement in the wind. We cut our willows back to the ground annually to encourage first-year growth, which best highlights these characteristics. To establish new plants, we place cuttings directly into the ground through ground cloth, which we use to prevent weeds during the initial years before removal.

Salix cinerea, commonly known as Grey Willow or Cinereous Willow, is a robust deciduous shrub or small tree reaching heights of 4 to 10 meters. It features sturdy, grey-green young twigs covered in dense, felt-like hair, and older bark that develops shallow longitudinal grooves with age. The dark green or grey-green leaves are elliptical to obovate, measuring 5 to 10 centimeters long, with wavy or finely serrated margins and soft grey hairs on the undersides. In early spring before the leaves emerge, the dioecious plant produces conspicuous catkins; male catkins are silvery-grey, turning yellow with pollen, while female catkins are longer and greenish-grey. This resilient species grows in full sun and thrives in deep, moist to wet soils, including marshy or temporarily flooded areas, making it suitable for river banks, coastal sites, and wildlife gardens.
This product is a dormant cutting that will take root, leaf out, and grow if planted under the right conditions.
