Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Golden Willow is a variety that provides great winter color for us. While the younger, growing stems are red, the base and dried wood feature a lighter, yellow color. Like all willows, this variety is easy to grow; we plant dormant or live cuttings directly in the ground with sufficient water and sun to allow them to take root. We prune them back near the ground every year to encourage the distinctive color and characteristics of the first-year wood.

Salix alba var. vitellina, commonly known as Golden Willow, is a fast-growing deciduous tree or multi-stemmed shrub native to Eurasia. It is characterized by bright golden-yellow new stem growth that provides winter color. The plant features lanceolate, finely-toothed green leaves that turn pale yellow in autumn. It adapts to various soil types, thrives in full sun to partial shade, and tolerates moist to wet conditions, making it suitable for rain gardens, waterside planting, and erosion control. Regular pruning or pollarding in late winter encourages the production of its signature colorful young wood.
