Golden Curls Willow (Salix x pendulina f. erythroflexuosa ‘Golden Curls’) Cutting
Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Golden Curls Willow is one of several willow varieties we grow, alongside Scarlet Curls, Sunny Twist, Golden Corkscrew, and Caradoc. This variety features stems that grow relatively straight initially, but they develop more dramatic curls and contortions toward the tips when given enough space. It has a slightly weeping growth habit, where the tops of the branches tend to arch over later in the summer as the weight increases. We cut the trunk back to the ground annually to encourage new first-year growth, which produces the best color, curls, and occasional catkins. It functions well as a hedge in both summer and winter, and the annual growth can be harvested for floral arrangements and crafts.
Botanical Specs & Profile:
Golden Curls Willow is a fast-growing deciduous tree reaching a mature height of 20 to 30 feet and a spread of 20 to 30 feet. It features an upright trunk with younger branches that twist, curl, and weep downward. The branches display a golden-yellow to bronze-gold bark color, which is prominent during the winter months. In spring, the tree produces finely serrated, lance-shaped green leaves that are also twisted. It thrives in full sun and adapts to various soil conditions, preferring moist to wet soils. It can be grown as a specimen shade tree, utilized as a hedge, or coppiced annually to produce curly stems for floral arrangements. Hardy in USDA zones 5 through 8.
