Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Fantail Willow, also known as fishtail or dragon tail willow, gets its name from its distinctive branches that are fused together up to a point before they spread out, though not all branches will display this fused effect. The multi-colored rods transition from yellow to a deeper red in certain spots, providing a colorful backdrop for the green foliage. The needle-shaped leaves feature slightly different colors on the top and bottom, which creates a fluttering visual effect when the wind blows. We have been growing this for a few years and the shapes and catkins are always different. Great conversation piece!
Botanical Specs & Profile:
Salix udensis Sekka, commonly known as the Japanese Fantail Willow, is a deciduous, multi-stemmed shrub growing 10 to 15 feet tall and wide. It features flattened, contorted, and fused branchlets that produce silvery-gray catkins with yellow anthers in early spring before leaves emerge. The lance-shaped foliage is green on top and silvery-green underneath. This fast-growing variety thrives in full sun to partial shade and adapts well to medium to wet soils, making it suitable for hedges, rain gardens, and floral arrangements.
This product is a dormant cutting that will take root, leaf out, and grow if planted under the right conditions.
