Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Continental Osier is a vigorous willow variety we grow that features thin leaves, which are deep green on top and silverish on the bottom, creating a shimmering appearance in the wind. During the summer, its stems are a bright green, drying to a warm light brown with subtle green undertones. This variety is suitable for use in basketry and structures. It's orange color is quite striking compared to the earthy tones of most basketry willow.
Botanical Specs & Profile:
Continental Osier Willow is an upright, vigorous deciduous shrub or small tree reaching a mature height of 10 to 26 feet with a spread of 10 to 20 feet. It features long, straight, flexible branches that dry to a light brown, suitable for basketry and weaving structures. The narrow, lanceolate leaves are dark green on top with a silvery, felt-like underside. In early spring, it produces yellow catkin blossoms before the foliage emerges. This variety performs best in full sun and adapts to a wide range of moist to wet soils, including heavy clay.
