Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Cardinal Willow is a colorful variety that provides visual interest in the winter after its leaves drop, displaying a range of colors from yellow to red. We prune this variety back to the ground every year to promote new growth. Annual pruning is essential, as the color characteristics appear on the first-year wood, whereas unpruned trunks and larger branches will eventually turn brown. It can definitely be used for basketry but we find sometimes that there are a large number rods with branches when we harvest.
Botanical Specs & Profile:
Cardinal Willow is a deciduous variety of white willow. This plant features bright orange-red to deep red winter stems and narrow, green leaves with silky white undersides. It can reach a height of 20 to 30 feet if left unpruned, but is typically maintained as a smaller shrub. It is hardy in USDA Zone 3 and above, performing best in full sun with moist to wet soil. Annual coppicing in late winter is recommended to maximize the production of colorful young stems. Suitable for use as a winter focal point, rain garden accent, or for basketry and cut stems.
