Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Calliantha Willow features slender leaves and a brownish-red stem color in the summer. When the rods are dried, which takes about six months, they cure to a consistent deep brown color with minimal side branching. We find this variety works well for weaving or growing as a garden hedge or barrier. Probably better for coarse basketry than for finer basketry. The cuttings root easily when planted in the ground, growing one to two feet tall in their first months and reaching about four to six feet tall by the start of summer after being coppiced. Year after year they will grow taller after each coppicing.
Botanical Specs & Profile:
Calliantha Willow (Salix calliantha) is a hybrid willow that grows as an erect small tree up to 20 feet tall, or 5 to 6 feet annually when coppiced. It features slender leaves that emerge red before turning dark green on top and bluish-green underneath. Stems are brownish-red in summer and dry to a deep brown. This variety is used for weaving, hedges, barriers, and ornamental landscaping, and it is deer resistant.
This product is a dormant cutting that will take root, leaf out, and grow if planted under the right conditions.
