Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Black Republican is an heirloom cherry variety originating from Oregon. We harvest these mid-season cherries just before the Bing variety, which it closely resembles and for which it is a parent. The fruit is deep red, slightly smaller than a standard Bing cherry, and has a sweet flavor profile. This variety is not self-fruitful and requires a pollinator to produce fruit.
Botanical Specs & Profile:
Black Republican Cherry is a historic heirloom sweet cherry tree reaching a mature height of 12 to 20 feet and a spread of 12 to 15 feet. It produces round, small to medium-sized fruit with deep purple-black skin and firm, dark flesh. The fruit features a concentrated flavor with notes of almond, rose, and herbs, ripening in mid-season just before the Bing variety. Suitable for USDA hardiness zones 5 through 9, this variety requires full sun, well-drained soil, and a compatible sweet cherry pollinator for cross-pollination.
