Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Black Pearl cherry, also known as NY8139, is an early-season variety that we grow to have a wider range of ripening times. In our experience, it ripens about a week after Early Burlat and a week and a half before Bing, making it a good filler between early and mid-season cherries. The literature notes that it has an upright growth habit and good disease resistance, though it sometimes requires pruning or thinning to maintain optimal fruit size. The cherries are firm, and the tree requires a pollinator, typically succeeding with most mid-season blooming varieties.

Black Pearl Cherry is a vigorous, upright sweet cherry tree developed by Cornell University that produces large, firm fruit with dark red to black skin and dark red flesh. The fruit features a crunchy texture, high sugar content, and long storage life, with resistance to rain cracking. This early-season variety ripens approximately 8 to 10 days before Bing and requires an early or mid-season blooming sweet cherry variety for pollination. Suitable for USDA hardiness zones 5 through 8, the tree is productive and resistant to bacterial canker.
