Black Maul Willow (Salix triandra 'Black Maul') Basketry Willow Cutting
Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Black Maul Willow is a Salix triandra variety that features nearly black colored branches contrasted against lush green leaves, making it a choice for a hedge in the summer. It is primarily grown for basketry. The wood shifts from a blackish tone to a warm brown color as it dries and ages. This variety grows quickly, reaching about 6 feet tall in its first year from cuttings and much higher in following years. Full full material production typically establishing within 3 to 4 years. We hear that it is very popular in Europe as a basketry willow and we can see why. They branches grow vigorously and very true. We find our Noire de Villaines is a nearly identical variety to Black Maul.
Botanical Specs & Profile:
Salix triandra 'Black Maul' (Black Maul Almond Willow) is a deciduous shrub cultivated for its long, flexible rods used extensively in basketry and weaving. The young stems exhibit a dark maroon-black coloration, maturing to an olive green-brown when dried. It features lanceolate green foliage and performs well in full sun to partial shade, adapting to moist or wet soils. Regular annual coppicing encourages the production of straight, vigorous growth reaching six to eight feet. Stems are valued by weavers for their pliability and strength. Hardiness zones 4-7.
This product is a dormant cutting that will take root, leaf out, and grow if planted under the right conditions. Since plant propagation success rates can vary depending on climate, location, and timing there is no universal recipe for success.
