Ben Sarek Black Currant (Ribes nigrum 'Ben Sarek') Cutting

Grower's Notes (Our Experience):

Ben Sarek black currant produces large berries and features healthy foliage. While we find it is not ideal for eating fresh out of hand due to its strong, tart flavor and lower sugar content, it is well-suited for processing. For us, baking it or using it in jams brings out a great flavor, especially when sugar is added. This variety is productive and very easy to propagate from winter cuttings, allowing anyone to easily increase stock.

Botanical Specs & Profile:

Ben Sarek Black Currant is a compact, mounding deciduous shrub reaching a mature height and spread of 3 to 4 feet. Developed by the Scottish Crop Research Institute, it features a small growth habit suitable for smaller gardens or closer hedge spacing. In spring, the plant produces clusters of greenish-yellow flowers that give way to heavy crops of large, glossy black berries ripening in mid-July. The variety is self-fertile, frost-resistant, and displays resistance to powdery mildew. It performs best in full sun to partial shade and adapts to fertile, well-drained soils.

This product is a dormant cutting that will take root, leaf out, and grow if planted under the right conditions. Since plant propagation success rates can vary depending on climate, location, and timing there is no universal recipe for success. If you are new to plant propagation, follow the link on each product page for 'Videos on How to Propagate...'.
