Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Ben Lomond black currant is a variety we grow that produces fruit slightly larger than some other black currants, such as Consort. When fully ripe, the currants become less tart, though they still retain a distinct tartness. We use them to make jams, crumbles, and pies, and they can also be mixed with other garden ribes like gooseberries or different colored currants. This variety produces fruit early in the season, ripening around the same time as raspberries and ahead of blueberries and blackberries.

Ben Lomond Blackcurrant is a compact, upright deciduous shrub reaching a mature height and spread of 1 to 1.5 meters. It features late-opening flowers that offer frost resistance, followed by large black berries produced in clusters on short strings. The fruit ripens in late July and August, offering a balanced sweet and sharp flavor suitable for cooking, preserves, and freezing. This self-fertile variety performs best in full sun to light shade and prefers sheltered, moist, well-drained soil.
