Atago Pear (Pyrus pyrifolia 'Atago') Scionwood
Atago pear is a later-ripening Asian pear variety that we grow in the San Juan Islands in our maritime Pacific Northwest environment. This variety produced fruit for us by its third year after planting. Thinning the fruit early in the season helps increase its overall size. Visually, it resembles the Chojuro variety due to its darker skin, but its flavor is more similar to the Shinseiki or Nijisseiki varieties. It ripens later in the sequence after those varieties, helping us extend our harvest into the late summer and early fall, and we utilize the fruit for both fresh eating and dehydrating. We find dehydrated pears to be not much different than candy!
Botanical Specs & Profile:
Atago Asian Pear is a deciduous fruit tree reaching a mature height and spread of 12 to 16 feet. It features white flowers during a midseason bloom period that require a companion variety for cross-pollination. The large fruit develops golden-brown russeted skin with crisp, sweet, and juicy flesh that ripens in early fall. Suitable for USDA hardiness zones 5 through 9, this variety produces fruit in cool summer climates and exhibits resistance to fireblight.
