Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
White Pearl currant is a variety that produces translucent, white berries where you can see the seeds inside. This plant is prolific, causing the branches to bend with clusters of fruit. Unlike darker currants, which have a much stronger and tarter flavor, White Pearl currants are milder but we still like to add sugar or bake them into products. They are also suitable for cooking in pies or jams. We find that currants are generally easy to propagate with dormant cuttings, as they do not require extensive hand-holding or strict humidity control.
Botanical Specs & Profile:
White Pearl Currant is an upright, compact deciduous shrub reaching a mature height of 3 to 5 feet and a similar spread. It features clusters of greenish-yellow flowers in spring, followed by large, translucent, creamy-white berries that ripen in July. The lobed green foliage turns shades of yellow and orange in the autumn. Suitable for USDA hardiness zones 3 through 8, this variety performs best in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained, neutral to acid soils.
