Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Red Clapp's Pear is a sport or red version of the original Clapp's Favorite discovered by a grower named Kalle in Michigan. We thin the fruit in the spring, which helps produce large, visually appealing pears. For us, this is an early variety that ripens in mid-September, just a little later than Ubileen, though it might be considered a summer pear in other parts of the country. We know they are ready to pick when the first fruit begins to drop and the pears on the branch start to soften. This is an excellent choice for an early to midseason pear that offers great flavor.
Botanical Specs & Profile:
Red Clapp's Favorite Pear, also known as Kalle Pear, is a large, upright-spreading deciduous fruit tree that originated as a natural bud sport of the original Clapp's Favorite variety in South Haven, Michigan. This cultivar reaches a mature height of 12 to 20 feet with a spread of 8 to 12 feet. In spring, the tree produces clusters of fragrant, white blossoms that attract pollinators. The foliage consists of glossy green leaves that can turn shades of red and yellow in autumn.
