Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Orcas pear is a mid-season variety of European pear discovered on Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands of the Pacific Northwest. We grow this variety on Lopez Island, where it produces large, visually appealing fruit featuring a blush on one side and a yellow-green skin on the side away from the sun. The fruit remains unblemished even though the tree can be slightly susceptible to leaf scab and black spot. When thinned properly, the pears grow quite large and ripen to a soft texture, making them suitable for fresh eating or dehydrating. This variety serves as a reliable follow-up to earlier European pears like Ubileen, typically ripening about three weeks later in mid-September.

Orcas Pear is a mid-season European pear variety discovered as a seedling on Orcas Island, Washington. The tree produces large fruit with smooth, yellow-green skin and a carmine blush. The flesh is sweet and buttery, suitable for fresh eating, canning, and drying. This variety exhibits resistance to pear scab. It grows best in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil, reaching a mature height of 10 to 15 feet. It requires another European pear variety for cross-pollination. Suitable for USDA hardiness zones 5 through 9, the fruit ripens in early to mid-September.
