Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Laxton's #1 red currant is a variety we grow that produces tart fruit with a translucent skin, making the seeds visible inside. The plants can occasionally attract aphids, which are kept in check by ladybugs. We find that the fruit emerges from darker brown, second-year wood, while the lighter brown first-year wood will produce fruit the following year if left unpruned. Because of its tartness, we generally recommend processing these currants by baking them, canning them, or turning them into jam with added sugar.

Laxton's #1 red currant is an upright, spreading deciduous shrub known for its heavy yields of glossy, bright red berries that mature in mid-July. This self-fertile variety features mid-green foliage and late spring flowers, which help it avoid damage from late frosts. It exhibits high resistance to powdery mildew and performs best when planted in full sun to partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. The plant reaches a mature height and spread of 3 to 6 feet, producing fruit on previous year's growth and older shoots.
