Hills Kiev Black Currant (Ribes nigrum 'Hills Kiev') Cutting
Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Hills Kiev black currant is an early-ripening variety that produces berries larger than our other black currant varieties. Originating from Ukraine and sourced via Vermont, we grow this selection in a netted field to protect the fruit from birds. The berries have a relatively mild and slightly tart taste, making them suitable to eat fresh or use for making jams and crumbles.
Botanical Specs & Profile:
Hill's Kiev Black Currant is a vigorous, upright deciduous shrub reaching a mature height of 4 to 5 feet. A selection derived from a Ukrainian cultivar, this productive variety features large, glossy black berries that ripen early in the season. The fruit has a mild, balanced flavor profile with less tartness than traditional black currants, making it suitable for fresh eating, jams, juices, and baking. It is adapted to USDA hardiness zones 3 through 8.
This product is a dormant cutting that will take root, leaf out, and grow if planted under the right conditions. Since plant propagation success rates can vary depending on climate, location, and timing there is no universal recipe for success.
