Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Farndon Willow is a choice for the garden if you want winter color. It does not grow as aggressively as some of our other types of winter-color willow, but it still produces reliable growth. As with all willows where you want to see the bright colors of the stems in the winter, we recommend pruning it back every year. In general, the first year of growth carries the distinct coloration. The other advantage of annual pruning is that it yields a bundle of cuttings for gifts or for sale. While one of the main features of Farndon Willow is its winter color, it also creates a hedge in the summer with its green leaves set against a deep red stem background. When the leaves fall, the colorful stems provide a striking contrast against the winter landscape.

Farndon Willow is a deciduous shrub grown for its winter stem color and hedging qualities. In summer, the plant features green foliage against deep red stems. After autumn leaf drop, the colorful stems provide winter interest. This variety exhibits a less aggressive growth habit compared to other winter-color willows. To maintain the bright stem coloration, annual pruning is required, as the color is most prominent on first-year growth. The cut stems retain their color well when dried and can be used for decorative arrangements.
