Eugene Basketry Willow (Salix purpurea 'Eugene') Cutting
Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Eugene basketry willow is a variety that features new growth that darkens over time. Once harvested and dried for about six months, the wood loses some of its luster but becomes darker. We find it very easy to plant by pushing cuttings directly into the ground. In our fields, we utilize drip tape underneath a weed barrier ground cloth to get the young willow started and to manage weeds before the plants become established. If harvesting for basketry purposes, we have been able to get a green shade in our basketry rods by harvesting prior to dormancy. If you harvest before dormancy you will have to strip the leaves though!
Botanical Specs & Profile:
Salix purpurea Eugene, commonly known as Eugene Purple Osier Willow, is a deciduous shrub utilized for basketry, living structures, and erosion control. It features long, straight stems with coloration ranging from light green to darker shades. This variety produces slender branches that darken over time and lose some luster when dried, making them highly suitable for weaving. It is a fast-growing plant that thrives in moist soils and full sun, and it can be coppiced or pollarded annually to manage size and promote new stem growth.
This product is a dormant cutting that will take root, leaf out, and grow if planted under the right conditions. Since plant propagation success rates can vary depending on climate, location, and timing there is no universal recipe for success.
