Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Early Burlat Cherry is a very early variety that ripens in mid-June in the maritime Northwest, arriving about two weeks before Bing cherries. We grow this variety and find the fruit to be sweet and flavorful, though heavy rain when it is ripening can cause a small amount of splitting in some of the cherries. To help protect the crop from birds, we experimented with hanging fake cherries on the tree while the real fruit was still green, which successfully deterred them and allowed us to harvest a large yield of red cherries this season. This strategy only seemed to work with the first ripening varieties like Early Burlat and Chelan. By the time later varieties start ripening, the birds are onto the deception!

Early Burlat Cherry is an early-season sweet cherry cultivar originating in Morocco in 1936. The tree grows semi-upright to spreading with moderate vigor. It produces medium to large, heart-shaped fruit with dark red skin and firm, juicy flesh. The crop ripens approximately two weeks before the Bing variety, typically in late May to mid-June. The fruit is susceptible to rain cracking. USDA Hardiness Zones 5-9.
