Blue Streak Willow (Salix acutifolia 'Blue Streak') Cutting
Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Blue Streak Willow is a finely branched variety that dries to a deep blue, a dark color not typically seen in the summer. In our experience, it typically sends up only one primary leader each year after it is coppiced in the winter. It features a natural white bloom on the stem that can be easily rubbed off, giving it the appearance of a winter decoration. This variety also produces catkins that can survive for about six months after drying. We plant our cuttings in the winter and coppice the trees every year, cutting them back severely to harvest the colorful rods for basketry and other decorative uses.

Salix acutifolia 'Blue Streak' is a deciduous shrub noted for its dark purple stems coated in a white bloom, which provides winter interest. In early spring, silver catkins appear along the branches before the narrow green leaves emerge. This variety grows in full sun and moist, well-drained soil, making it suitable for borders, cutting gardens, and damp areas. It responds well to hard annual pruning to maintain strong stem color and a compact form.
