Bleu Willow (Salix purpurea 'Bleu') Basketry Willow Cutting
Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Bleu willow is a variety of Salix purpurea distinguished by its darker wood. We find it is excellent for basketry because the rods grow straight and true, typically reaching six to eight feet in length with very little side branching. To cultivate it, we recommend planting a cutting in the ground with plenty of water and sun, then coppicing it by cutting it back to the ground each year to encourage long, upright growth.
Botanical Specs & Profile:
Salix purpurea 'Bleu' is a deciduous shrub selected for basketry, living structures, and ornamental planting. It produces long, straight, flexible stems with minimal side branching, which exhibit a red to purplish-red color when young and mature to a darker wood tone. The foliage consists of narrow, blue-green leaves that emerge with a reddish tint. Small black and red catkins appear in late winter or early spring before leaf emergence. This fast-growing variety thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist to wet soils, making it suitable for erosion control and rain gardens. Coppice annually to maintain stem color and vigor.
