Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Winter Glory is a willow variety that we grow for both its ornamental qualities and its biomass. In the summer, these plants produce dense foliage that creates an effective hedge, with rods growing to about six feet tall by the end of the season. We coppice the plants back to the ground annually to harvest straight rods and cuttings. In the winter, Winter Glory produces large, gray catkins that emerge somewhat later in the season compared to other varieties like Rubykins. We harvest these catkins by pruning the sticks once they reach the desired stage of development, ensuring they are not placed in water afterward to try and 'freeze' their winter appearance in place.

Salix Winter Glory, also known as Giant Pussy Willow, is a deciduous hybrid shrub of Salix gracilistyla and Salix caprea. It produces large, silvery-gray catkins that emerge from red buds in late winter. This variety reaches a mature height of 10 to 15 feet and a width of 5 to 8 feet, performing best in full sun and moist, well-drained soil. It is hardy in USDA zones 4 to 8 and is used for cut flower arrangements, hedges, and wildlife gardens.
