Weeping Willow (Salix babylonica) Cutting

Grower's Notes (Our Experience):

Traditional weeping willow, or Salix babylonica, is a classic variety known for its branches that grow to lean towards the ground. Because we coppice our willows close to the ground annually, new growth will initially appear straight before developing the weeping characteristic after a couple of years. This tree can grow quite large over time. We water it regularly and provide full sun to maintain its vigorous growth. We generally use the annual growth to create new plants or to sell as rods or cuttings. You can easily grow a tree from an eight-inch cutting by placing it in soil with ample water and sun, which will result in a good-sized tree ready for planting out within a year.

Botanical Specs & Profile:

Salix babylonica, also known as the traditional weeping willow, is a medium to large deciduous tree. It features a broad, rounded crown with long, pendulous branches that drape toward the ground. The narrow, lanceolate leaves are light green on the upper surface and silver or grayish-green underneath, turning yellow in autumn. This species exhibits a rapid growth rate, reaching a mature height and spread of 30 to 40 feet. It grows in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist to wet soils, making it suitable for areas near water features. It adapts to various soil types and roots easily from cuttings.

This product is a dormant cutting that will take root, leaf out, and grow if planted under the right conditions. Since plant propagation success rates can vary depending on climate, location, and timing there is no universal recipe for success. If you are new to plant propagation, follow the link on each product page for 'Videos on How to Propagate...'.
