Grower's Notes (Our Experience):

We try to harvest Viola when is completely ripe. It produces large berries that have a sweet flavor reminiscent of grapes.  It's not a grape for sure, it's a currant, but for me it has a little grape-like flavor to it. Unlike red or white currants, the seeds in this variety are small and not very noticeable when eaten. We select these berries to sell at the farmers market because they can be eaten fresh without needing added sugar or processing. Additionally, we have found that this variety propagates easily from cuttings, making it a reliable choice for expanding a fruit garden.

Botanical Specs & Profile:

Viola Black Currant is a medium-sized deciduous shrub reaching a mature height and spread of 3 to 5 feet. It features multi-lobed, aromatic green foliage and small greenish-yellow flower clusters in the spring. The flowers give way to clusters of large, glossy black berries that ripen in midsummer. The fruit has a sweet flavor with small, unnoticeable seeds, making it suitable for fresh eating or processing. Suitable for USDA hardiness zones 3 through 7, this variety performs best in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soils.
