Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Schwerin's Willow is an extremely vigorous variety in our soil characterized by narrow leaves with a dark green top and a shiny silver underside. We coppice these plants annually to harvest the long, unbranched rods, which are useful for structures, weaving, and biomass. And when in doubt, we use them for kindling. While the living stems have a deep brown or reddish tone, the wood dries to a striking, deep black color after about six months of seasoning. This variety is also notable for being one of the earliest willows to leaf out in the late winter or early spring.
Botanical Specs & Profile:
Salix schwerinii, commonly known as Schwerin's Willow or narrow-leaf willow, is a vigorous deciduous shrub or small tree native to northeastern Asia that can reach heights of 10 to 15 meters. It features exceptionally long, narrow, dark green leaves with a dense, silvery, silk-haired underside. Stems are dark brown to red-brown when young, transitioning to a lighter color as they mature, and the wood dries to a deep black. This variety is one of the earliest willows to leaf out and flower in late winter or early spring. It thrives in open, sunny locations with moist to wet soils, including heavy clay, and is highly tolerant of winter frost. Ideal for biomass production, soil stabilization, and living structures, it produces straight, unbranched rods when coppiced annually.
This product is a dormant cutting that will take root, leaf out, and grow if planted under the right conditions.
