Salix purpurea x daphnoides Willow (Salix purpurea x daphnoides) Basketry Willow Cutting
Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Salix purpurea crossed with Salix daphnoides is a classic basketry willow featuring very straight, slender rods that dry to a dark color. We coppice this variety near the ground each spring to encourage new shoots which can be harvested the following winter for basketry or floral arrangements. When grown in the garden, its long, slender leaves show contrasting colors on the front and back so when they are caught in the breeze they shimmer. To maintain its purple-brown stem coloration and distinct characteristics, we recommend harvesting the first-year growth annually, as older wood eventually develops traditional brown bark.
Botanical Specs & Profile:
Salix purpurea x daphnoides willow, is a deciduous hybrid shrub utilized for basketry and ornamental landscaping. It features straight, slender rods with purple-brown first-year growth and elongated leaves that present contrasting colors on the upper and lower surfaces. The stems dry to a dark green-grey or muted blue-grey hue, retaining flexibility suitable for weaving and floral arrangements. When planted for basketry, cuttings are spaced 30 cm apart in rows 60 cm apart. The plant requires annual coppicing to the ground during winter to maintain its colorful stem characteristics, straight growth habit, and optimal rod flexibility. Left unpruned, it develops the brown bark and growth form of a standard willow tree. Hardiness zones 5 to 8.
This product is a dormant cutting that will take root, leaf out, and grow if planted under the right conditions. Since plant propagation success rates can vary depending on climate, location, and timing there is no universal recipe for success.
