Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Oka Willow is a Salix purpurea variety that we grow for both hedging and basketry. In the winter, we harvest its straight rods, which feature a warm brown color that cures to a lighter shade after drying for about six months. This vigorous plant establishes quickly, grows rapidly from its root system, and can be coppiced to the ground annually to produce regular cuttings suitable for basket weaving and floral arrangements.

Oka Basket Willow (Salix purpurea 'Oka') is a traditional basketry selection discovered at Oka Abbey in Quebec. This variety produces straight, thick, and lengthy rods that grow 6 to 8 feet annually when coppiced. The rods feature a brownish-green hue that matures to a warm brown after drying, making it suitable for basketry, living fences, and garden structures. It grows as a large shrub, tolerates wildlife browsing, and thrives in full sun and moist soil within hardiness zones 3 through 8.
This product is a dormant cutting that will take root, leaf out, and grow if planted under the right conditions.
