Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Japanese Willow SX64, a variety of Miyabe willow, features slender leaves that resemble bamboo when moving in the wind. We find it works well as a hedge, a privacy barrier, or as a standalone garden feature, especially if cut back to the ground annually to encourage fresh green growth. When dried for about six months, some percentage of the rods will become dark black. Because the rods have minimal branching, we recommend them for coarse basket weaving and other decorative wood crafts. We propagate these easily from cuttings, which can be planted directly in the ground or started in pots with adequate sun and water.
Botanical Specs & Profile:
Salix miyabeana SX64 is a fast-growing deciduous shrub willow variety native to Japan. This cultivar features multiple small-diameter, vertical stems and slender green leaves. It is disease resistant, beetle resistant, and hardy in USDA Zones 4-6. It tolerates a wide range of soil conditions, including wet and waterlogged soils, and prefers full sun exposure. At maturity, it reaches 15-23 feet in height with a 3-10 foot spread. Uses include biomass production, privacy hedges, windbreaks, living structures, and basketry.
This product is a dormant cutting that will take root, leaf out, and grow if planted under the right conditions.
