Jagiellonka Willow (Salix purpurea "Jagiellonka") Cutting

Grower's Notes (Our Experience):

Jagiellonka willow is a purple willow variety that provides an attractive appearance in the summer and functional basketry willow in the winter. When dried, the straight rods feature a consistent warm, reddish-brown color with minimal side branching, making them suitable for decorative purposes and basket weaving. We propagate this variety from cuttings, which can be established either in pots or directly in the ground, provided they receive sufficient water and sunlight. For production, we manage our willow using a coppicing method, cutting the plants low to the ground annually to easily harvest the tall rods. Like some other purpurea varieties, if harvested before dormancy (when the leaves are still on the stems), the rods will take on a greenish hue.

Botanical Specs & Profile:

Salix purpurea 'Jagiellonka', commonly known as the Jagiellonka Willow, is a vigorous deciduous shrub primarily grown for basketry and ornamental use. In spring, it produces straight, purple-red new stems with bright green foliage. Following annual pollarding or coppicing, the plant yields unbranched rods that reach 5 to 7 feet in length. The fresh green rods feature a faint red blush and dry to a consistent pale orange-yellow or warm brown, making them ideal for weaving and decorative arrangements. This variety thrives in full sun and moist to wet soils.

This product is a dormant cutting that will take root, leaf out, and grow if planted under the right conditions. Since plant propagation success rates can vary depending on climate, location, and timing there is no universal recipe for success.
