Hooker, Coastal, Dune Willow Cutting

Hooker, Coastal, Dune Willow (Salix hookeriana ) Cutting

Grower's Notes (Our Experience):

Hooker Willow is native to the Pacific Northwest, where we often observe it growing naturally in coastal areas. This variety features leaves that are somewhat rounded and display distinct colors on each side, creating a shifting appearance in the wind. Because it exhibits minimal branching, it produces straight rods by the end of the growing season that we can use for kindling, building structures, or creating woven willow fences. They are a little too thick for any kind of basketry work. We find this variety exceptionally easy to propagate from eight-inch cuttings during either the summer or the winter.

Botanical Specs & Profile:

Salix hookeriana, commonly known as Hooker's Willow or Coastal Willow, is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to the coastlines of the Pacific Northwest. It typically grows 2 to 8 meters (6 to 26 feet) tall, often forming dense thickets. In early spring, large, hairy catkins appear along the branches before the emergence of broad, oval, leathery green leaves that feature pale, woolly undersides. Highly tolerant of maritime exposure, salt spray, and prolonged soil saturation, this resilient species is utilized for coastal landscaping, erosion control, streambank stabilization, and wetland restoration. It performs best in full sun to partial shade and moist to wet soils.

This product is a dormant cutting that will take root, leaf out, and grow if planted under the right conditions. Since plant propagation success rates can vary depending on climate, location, and timing there is no universal recipe for success.
