Brittany Green Basketry Willow (Salix purpurea 'Brittany Green') Cutting
Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Brittany Green Willow is a basketry willow but also a variety we value for its summer presence and landscaping potential. It features long, narrow leaves with slightly different colors on each side, creating a fluttering appearance in the wind. This willow grows with upright, strong rods that can serve as a substitute for bamboo in the garden. We manage its growth by cutting it back to the ground every winter. It is easy to propagate from cuttings; we plant them directly into the ground where they readily take root and leaf out on their own. In our zone eight climate, we can plant these cuttings throughout the year, and they typically produce three- to four-foot rods within six months, and becoming taller and taller for the next several years after each winter coppicing.
Botanical Specs & Profile:
Salix purpurea Brittany Green is a deciduous shrub used for basketry, living structures, and ornamental garden planting. It produces slender, flexible, upright rods that reach six to seven feet in a single growing season. Fresh growth features dark red to vivid purple stems with a subtly striped appearance and small, dark green oval leaves, which dry to a rustic dark green or purplish-brown hue. This variety is typically propagated from cuttings planted in winter or early spring, thrives in full sun to light shade with ample moisture, and is coppiced annually to the ground to maintain rod quality.
This product is a dormant cutting that will take root, leaf out, and grow if planted under the right conditions. Since plant propagation success rates can vary depending on climate, location, and timing there is no universal recipe for success.
