Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Melanostachys, also known as black pussy willow, is a very slow-growing willow variety. We notice it does not grow as quickly as its neighboring willows in our beds. Its unique characteristic is its black catkins. They are one of a kind. This variety is a nice addition if you want a unique catkin in your garden or willow collection. But if you do decide to grow them, we suggest growing in large quantity by planting a whole row so you can get the maximum number of catkins.

Salix gracilistyla 'Melanostachys', commonly known as Black Pussy Willow, is a unique and highly ornamental deciduous shrub famed for its striking purple-black spring catkins adorned with brick-red anthers that mature to a golden yellow. Winner of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, this multi-stemmed plant features attractive purplish-black winter stems and dark green leaves with silvery undersides. Reaching a mature size of 6 to 10 feet tall and wide, it thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils, though it tolerates wet conditions well. Highly valued for early spring interest and cut flower arrangements, it can be pruned hard every few years to maintain its size and promote vigorous new stem growth.
This product is a dormant cutting that will take root, leaf out, and grow if planted under the right conditions.
