Americana Basketry Willow (Salix 'americana' (S. eriocephala x S. petiolaris)) Cutting
Grower's Notes (Our Experience):
Americana Willow is a popular basketry variety that we grow on our farm. In the summer, it forms a full hedge with attractive foliage that waves in the breeze, while in the winter, it can be harvested for basketry rods. We plant the cuttings by inserting them into the ground using weed fabric to suppress competing growth and drip tape to provide the consistent water they require. While you can harvest usable basketry material in the first year, the plants establish deep roots over the summer, leading to significantly higher biomass production and rod quantity in subsequent years.
Botanical Specs & Profile:
Salix x 'Americana' is a medium deciduous hybrid shrub growing to 10 feet in height and width. It thrives in full sun and moist to wet soil, tolerating poor or clay conditions. Cultivated primarily for basketry and rustic furniture, it produces long, straight rods with minimal side branching that dry to a reddish-brown color. The plant features bright green foliage and produces gray catkins that mature to red and yellow from April to May. Hardy to USDA Zone 3a.
This product is a dormant cutting that will take root, leaf out, and grow if planted under the right conditions. Since plant propagation success rates can vary depending on climate, location, and timing there is no universal recipe for success.
